§ 5½-12. Lamps and other equipment.

  • (a)

    Lamps and reflectors. Every bicycle, when in use during the period from sunset to sunrise, shall be equipped with at least one lighted lamp exhibiting a white light visible for at least five hundred (500) feet, a clear reflex reflector on the front of the bicycle visible in front and a red reflex reflector visible in the rear. No person shall sell a new bicycle or pedal for use on a bicycle that is not equipped with a type of reflex reflector approved by the secretary of state on each pedal, visible from the front and rear of the bicycle during darkness from a distance of two hundred (200) feet. No person shall sell or offer for sale a new bicycle that is not equipped with side reflectors. Such reflectors shall be visible from each side of the bicycle from a distance of five hundred (500) feet and shall be red to the rear of the center of the bicycle and amber to the front of the center of the bicycle. No person shall sell or offer for sale bicycle side reflectors that are not approved by the secretary of state.

    (b)

    Brakes. Every bicycle shall be equipped with a brake which will enable the operator to make the brake wheel skid on a dry, level clean pavement.

    (c)

    Audible signals on bicycles. No person shall operate a bicycle unless it is equipped with a bell or other device capable of giving a signal audible for a distance of at least one hundred (100) feet, except that a bicycle shall not be equipped with, nor shall any person use on a bicycle any siren or whistle.
