§ 5½-11. Operation of bicycles.

  • (a)

    Traffic regulations. A person riding a bicycle shall be subject to the provisions of the Illinois Vehicle Code and all local traffic regulations except for those provisions which by their terms or nature are inapplicable.

    (b)

    Endangering persons or property. No bicycle shall be ridden at any time, at any place or in any manner as to be dangerous to any person or property.

    (c)

    Clinging to moving vehicles; towing. No person traveling upon a bicycle shall cling to or attach himself or his bicycle to any other moving vehicle or other bicycle upon any roadway, nor shall any such person hook anything on or tow anything from his bicycle.

    (d)

    Riding abreast. Persons operating a bicycle upon a street or where it is permissible on a sidewalk, shall not ride abreast, but shall proceed in single file.

    (e)

    Riding on handlebars, frame, etc. No operator of a bicycle shall carry any other person upon the handlebars, frame or tank of any such vehicle. This restriction is not applicable to adults using bicycles equipped to transport passengers.

    (f)

    Carrying passengers or articles. No person operating a bicycle shall carry more than one person for each permanent and regular seat attached to such bicycle, nor shall any such person carry any package or article which prevents him from keeping both hands upon the handlebars.

    (g)

    Speed limit. No person shall operate a bicycle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions then existing, and in no case shall exceed speed limits already posted for other vehicles.

    (h)

    Manner of parking. Bicycles shall be parked next to the curb on the sidewalk but not in the street, or upon the sidewalk in a supporting rack or in a rack where spaces are available for such purposes at various locations.

    (i)

    Riding on sidewalks. It shall be unlawful for any person to ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk within a commercial district. Whenever a person is riding a bicycle upon a sidewalk, such person shall give audible signal as prescribed in section 5½-12 before overtaking and passing a pedestrian.
